The Liberty Bell. Independence Hall. We all know Philadelphia for its famous landmarks and historical background, but did you also know that it's home to this wicked food market? Join this Italian Market tour in Philadelphia for a dose of yummy Philly food at its very best.
Starting at the always-colourful South Street, head off with your local guide through the neighbourhood of Bella Vista in South Philly. You’ll explore the tiny streets in this section and have a chance to view some of the iconic mosaic art from a local artist. As we continue to tour Philadelphia, swing by a historic deli, duck into a tempting bakery, and stroll along Christian Street before arriving at the sounds, aromas, and sights of the famous Italian market or, more accurately, the South 9th Street Curb Market.
The market is the oldest and largest everyday open-air market in the USA, and it’s easy to understand why it is one of Philly’s must-see attractions. With your local guide leading the way on this Philly tour, explore the huge variety of stores located here, many of which are Italian in heritage. Tempt tastebuds as you wander past cheeses, chocolates, spices, and olive oils. Discover bakeries, butchers, and a myriad of other produce stalls plus a wonderful kitchen store. And don’t worry, if the temptation to purchase becomes too great, you’re likely to get a bargain as many of these stores discount for our travellers! Along the way you'll get the chance to talk to some of the owners and employees of these shops and stalls, and hear fascinating local stories of the development of this area over the years.
As you continue through the market, cross over the main intersection and head towards a variety of Mexican stores. If this area looks familiar it’s probably because it was here that Rocky ran through the streets on one of his famous training runs. Nearby you’ll also see a selection of Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Chinese stores, brimming with aromas and sights that are sure to delight the senses. This Philadelphia market tour concludes at the intersection made famous by local restaurant competitors Pat's and Geno's, where you'll be able to buy a famous Philly Cheesesteak after the tour. If you don’t want the adventure to end here, continue with your guide on the Markets, Mosaics, & Magic tour.

This tour was exactly what I was seeking -- A solid mix of culture, cuisine, history and fun. Chuck shared his neighborhood with us, providing fun & interesting insights that only a local can. Our group was diverse, but all seemed to enjoy (incl kids). I give it high marks in all categories, and will recommend this tour to others.

I had a wonderful time and our guide (Chuck) was very informative. The length of his information was just enough that you didn't get bored and his choice of businesses to visit were different from eachother so you got an idea of all the different cultures in the market. FABULOUS !

My five friends and I took the Italian Market tour with Josh as our guide. The tour consisted of only our group so it was nice that we could tailor it to how long we wanted to stay at different stops. Josh was a great guide and very personable. I would tell you to either bring a backpack or bags with handles so that you can carry your purchases easily. We actually backtracked after the tour to buy some items that we didn't want to carry. The only negative I have is that not every retailer that we went into offered us samples,(I felt the first bakery didn't even really want us there) which you would think they would since Urban Adventures is bringing them business! Not a negative towards the tour company, more towards the stores, but maybe Urban Adventures should look into other retailers that would appreciate the business a little more. Anyway thanks Josh for a great tour.

Our tour guide Nina was fabulous! This 2 hour tour of the Italian market in South Philly was very informative, enlightening and entertaining. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, personable, interesting and funny. I loved her rapport with all the owners/employees of the businesses that we visited. She allowed us to wander a bit, which was really nice. We got to sample some of the foods from most of the shops that we visited which was delightful. We are a bunch of Jersey Girls that thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience and will definitely return to shop. We cannot wait for our next Urban Adventure. Thank you so much Nina for a great day! And thank you Urban Adventures for providing these wonderful tours. Very highly recommended.

My guide, Josh, was excellent. He has a great rapport with the merchants and he encouraged me to ask questions. I really enjoyed that interaction. I kept thinking of what I would have missed if I tried to just walk down 9th Street. It was a very pleasant experience. I highly recommend it and would like to do other Urban Adventures tours in the future.

As I told Ryan, our tour guide, he exceeded our expectations. Ryan went 45 minutes overtime with us to show us extra shops and tailor the tour to our group of 9, branching out to chocolate, pastry and other shops. Our access to shop owners was special, and my wife and I returned to 4 shops after the tour to shop and all 4 owners recognized us from the tour. Outstanding day by Urban Adventure.

Alex was the best tour guide ever, sensitive to time schedules, gently reminding us when to "Just pop in to peek around" or when we had time to shop. He was knowledgeable, informative and pleasant, crossing the street to allow for our wheelchair bound tourist to have accesible sidewalks or a clearer path. We enjoyed him VERY much!

I have lived in the Delaware Valley for 23 years, and have been to the Italian Market, but this was the first time I have had a guided tour of the Market and the Italian-American part of Philadelphia. Jason was a super guide, with a great knowledge of the history, culture, and traditions of this unique part of the Mid-Atlantic region. I really enjoyed his taking us into various establishments that had been in the Italian Market area for generations, and listening to their unique stories. After the tour I had lunch at Ralph's, because it is the oldest Italian-American restaurant in the US, I learned from Jason. I had lived in San Francisco not far from the famous Fior d'Italia, and it was great to experience a similar tradition and experience some 3,000 miles away from North Beach, SF. I came away, on Saturday, really having a good understanding of the history of Italian immigration, their establishing family businesses, and building a community, that we all can share when we visit the Italian Market. Thanks so much, Jason! Great job! Bravo!

Jeremy was our guide for the tour of the Italian Market. I just love this tour so much, that it was actually my second tour of the market. The first time was with a friend, but this time I brought several friends. Great time learning the history and culture with a knowledgeable guide. Ate our way through the market :)

At Urban Adventures, we firmly believe local travel is one of the best ways we can support responsible tourism. In fact, we believe it so strongly that we’ve made it our entire business! All our tours are run by local experts, not some faceless corporate team located halfway around the world with no sense of the local vibe.
We craft our tours to ensure every traveller has authentic interactions with local people, businesses, transportation, and food and drink. Local travel gives you the opportunity to experience a destination as locals do, and has the potential to impact you in ways you never imagined. In short: local is awesome.
As a responsible travel company, we promise to:
- Use locally owned infrastructure on our tours whenever possible.
- Spread the financial benefits amongst local people and operators.
- Provide employment and leadership opportunities for local people.
- Respect local customs and culture.
- Provide safe tours for Urban Adventure partners, staff, and travellers.
- Educate travellers and our partners about how and why we choose to travel this way.
- Limit any negative impact to the daily lifestyles of local people.
- Limit any physical impact on natural and cultural environments.
- Provide support to organisations and local communities.
- Provide opportunities for travellers to interact with local people.
- Actively ban partners, staff, and passenger participation in or endorsement of commercial sexual activities or illegal drug use on Urban Adventures tours.
- Work to prevent the exploitation of children in tourism.
- Actively discourage participation in activities that exploit animals.
- Use local partners that adhere to Urban Adventures' responsible travel principles.
- Support and encourage fair employment practices.
- Give our travellers the best possible value.
- Have fun!
As a traveller, we ask that you keep the following in mind:
- People: Be mindful of the local citizens, and seek understanding through shared experiences. Consider their customs and values while in their homeland, and when in doubt, ask your guide for advice.
- Environment: Be mindful of the local environment, and act with conservation and sustainability in mind. Follow local guidelines, as recommended by your guide, and make proactive decisions on your own.
- Culture: When travelling to other cultures, remember that not everyone's customs are the same as yours at home. Be respectful, and be mindful of openly questioning a customary practice, even if you disagree with it. Try to understand from their perspective. You may learn something! Your guide will be an excellent point of reference here, so check with them if you're unsure.
- Economy: Make every effort to use local businesses and put your tourism dollars in the right (local) pocket. We use local vendors and businesses, and your guide will be able to advise you on the best ways to support the local economy.
