The Liberty Bell. Independence Hall. We all know Philadelphia for its famous landmarks and historical background, but did you also know that it’s home to this wicked food market? Join this Italian Market tour in Philadelphia for a dose of yummy Philly food at its very best.
Starting at the always-colorful South Street, head off with your local guide through the neighborhood of Bella Vista in South Philly. You explore the tiny streets in this section and have a chance to view some of the iconic mosaic art from a local artist. As we continue to tour Philadelphia, swing by a historic deli, duck into a tempting bakery, and stroll along Christian Street before arriving at the sounds, aromas, and sights of the famous Italian market or, more accurately, the South 9th Street Curb Market.
The market is the oldest and largest everyday open-air market in the USA, and it’s easy to understand why it is one of Philly’s must-see attractions. With your local guide leading the way on this Philly walking tour, explore the huge variety of stores located here, many of which are Italian in heritage. Tempt tastebuds as you wander past cheeses, chocolates, spices, and olive oils. Discover bakeries, butchers, and a myriad of other produce stalls plus a wonderful kitchen store. And don’t worry, if the temptation to purchase becomes too great, you’re likely to get a bargain as many of these stores offer discounts for our travelers! Along the way, you get the chance to talk to some of the owners and employees of these shops and stalls, and hear fascinating local stories of the development of this area over the years.
As you continue through the market, cross over the main intersection and head towards a variety of Mexican stores. If this area looks familiar it’s probably because it was here that Rocky ran through the streets on one of his famous training runs. Nearby you also see a selection of Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Chinese stores, brimming with aromas and sights that are sure to delight the senses.
Your tour concludes in the heart of the Italian Market in the Bella Vista neighborhood, with easy access to public transportation.

My family (husband, myself, 12-year-old daughter) and I have lived in nearby Bucks County for 12 years….but while we’ve traveled many places, we’d never been to the Italian Market. Looking for something fun one weekend, we decided to take the … tour of the area, just to see what it was like. And – wow, what a treat! Our tour guide was Nina, and from the first minute, she made us feel like we were a warm group of friends strolling through one of her favorite parts of Philadelphia. She not only showed us some of the best shops in the Market, and introduced us to the shopkeepers, but went out of her way to give us insights from someone who shops in the Market every Saturday. She guided us on which shops specialize in which items, and made sure that everywhere we went, if we wanted to purchase something, we received a discount for the purchase. She showed us shops that, personally, I never would have gone into on our own; she showed us a whole new world while she was telling us some wonderful stories about the area. The bottom line? This is a fantastic tour for visitors to Philadelphia, because you’ll see some famous sights and experience a wonderful part of the city…..but locals will benefit even more, because we’re lucky enough to be able to go back and shop again and again at the wonderful stores, and see the warm and welcoming people, that make the Italian Market what it is.
Melissa N. from traveled on 18 Apr 2017:
Our guide, Cheryl was excellent. We lucked out with a beautiful day and really enjoyed our tour. We live in Philly, have been to the Italian Market many times but there was so much more to discover and experience.
Ms. Julienne S. from USA traveled on 22 Jan 2017:
Because I was the only person on the tour Ariel personalized it…we visited Isgro’s Pasticcera on Christian treed for cannoli, and talked more about Julian Abele, an architect of the Art Museum, than about Rocky. The tour was informative and provided many ideas for future visits on my own. Later I went to Macy’s to see the light show and view the Wanamaker organ. I also learned more about Isaiah Zagar’s mosaics so I could better appreciate them when I discovered them on the street. Of course the Italian Market experience was excellent, and I returned to several shops later as well. I would rate the tour higher than a 10 if that was possible!

He made our morning tour so enjoyable, that in spite of the 90+ degree temperature, we could have listened to him all day!
Mrs. Annemarie H. from USA traveled on 20 Jun 2016:
Loved the ‘behind the scenes’ experience with the local shop owners! We also met a local who had worked on the Frank Rizzo mural who was doing his shopping that morning. Our guide knew him and we got a chance to talk to him as well.
Mrs. Lauren D. from USA traveled on 28 Apr 2016:
Our tour guide Kenny was great! He was extremely knowledgeable about not only the Italian Market, but also other Philadelphia history. He was energetic, excited, polite, and most of all patient with our 3 kids! He made sure they had some cookies from Isgro, which was a huge highlight of the trip for them! We all had a great time!
Mrs. Terri J. from USA traveled on 27 Apr 2016:
I am a “born and bred Philadelphian” who has given tours of the historic mansions in Fairmount Park and I just want to commend Kenny for an very informative and fun tour of the Italian Market, He was really good at knowing his audience and giving us the time we needed at each stop. I never felt rushed during the tour and although we had a parking concern and had to leave the tour 20 mins. earlier, Kenny did a fabulous job with the two hour time limit of the tour. I will recommend this tour as well as other … tours to my family and friends. Thank you for a wonderful morning spent learning more about the city that I love! Terri Jones

Our tour was the weekend before Christmas— so there were many people in the shops. Our tour guide did a great job showing us as much as possible given crowded shops. He had an excellent background in the culture and art murals. He did all he could to give us a feel for past and current Italian Market district. We will recommend this tour to family and friends.

Chuck was an awesome tour guide! This was a great way to spend a Saturday morning. I really enjoyed all of the personal stories that were incorporated throughout the day by our guide, as well as various store owners.
Ms. Lisa T. from USA traveled on 28 Apr 2014:
My five friends and I took the Italian Market tour with Josh as our guide. The tour consisted of only our group so it was nice that we could tailor it to how long we wanted to stay at different stops. Josh was a great guide and very personable. I would tell you to either bring a backpack or bags with handles so that you can carry your purchases easily. We actually backtracked after the tour to buy some items that we didn’t want to carry. The only negative I have is that not every retailer that we went into offered us samples,(I felt the first bakery didn’t even really want us there) which you would think they would since [Philly Tour Hub] is bringing them business! Not a negative towards the tour company, more towards the stores, but maybe [Philly Tour Hub] should look into other retailers that would appreciate the business a little more. Anyway thanks Josh for a great tour.
Mrs. Mariam B. from USA traveled on 26 Apr 2014:
Our tour guide Nina was fabulous! This 2 hour tour of the Italian market in South Philly was very informative, enlightening and entertaining. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, personable, interesting and funny. I loved her rapport with all the owners/employees of the businesses that we visited. She allowed us to wander a bit, which was really nice. We got to sample some of the foods from most of the shops that we visited which was delightful. We are a bunch of Jersey Girls that thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience and will definitely return to shop. We cannot wait for our next [tour]. Thank you so much Nina for a great day! And thank you [Philly Tour Hub] for providing these wonderful tours. Very highly recommended.
Ms. Laura M. from USA traveled on 21 Apr 2014:

My guide, Josh, was excellent. He has a great rapport with the merchants and he encouraged me to ask questions. I really enjoyed that interaction. I kept thinking of what I would have missed if I tried to just walk down 9th Street. It was a very pleasant experience. I highly recommend it…
Mr. Doug W. from USA traveled on 10 Jul 2013:
As I told Ryan, our tour guide, he exceeded our expectations. Ryan went 45 minutes overtime with us to show us extra shops and tailor the tour to our group of 9, branching out to chocolate, pastry and other shops. Our access to shop owners was special, and my wife and I returned to 4 shops after the tour to shop and all 4 owners recognized us from the tour.

Alex was the best tour guide ever, sensitive to time schedules, gently reminding us when to “Just pop in to peek around” or when we had time to shop. He was knowledgeable, informative and pleasant, crossing the street to allow for our wheelchair bound tourist to have accesible sidewalks or a clearer path. We enjoyed him VERY much!
Ms. Nancy Z. from USA traveled on 29 Oct 2012:
Exellent tour. Jason was sensitive to the cultural differences of the group. He allowed extra time at the shops that were of more interest. We really enjoyed visiting the great shop choices… looking forward to another tour soon

A great tour. Much more than we anticipated.
Ms. Kathryn C. from USA traveled on 05 Sep 2012:
I have lived in the Delaware Valley for 23 years, and have been to the Italian Market, but this was the first time I have had a guided tour of the Market and the Italian-American part of Philadelphia. Jason was a super guide, with a great knowledge of the history, culture, and traditions of this unique part of the Mid-Atlantic region. I really enjoyed his taking us into various establishments that had been in the Italian Market area for generations, and listening to their unique stories. After the tour I had lunch at Ralph’s, because it is the oldest Italian-American restaurant in the US, I learned from Jason. I had lived in San Francisco not far from the famous Fior d’Italia, and it was great to experience a similar tradition and experience some 3,000 miles away from North Beach, SF. I came away, on Saturday, really having a good understanding of the history of Italian immigration, their establishing family businesses, and building a community, that we all can share when we visit the Italian Market. Thanks so much, Jason! Great job! Bravo!
Mrs. Marianne G. from USA traveled on 01 Aug 2012:
Jeremy was our guide for the tour of the Italian Market. I just love this tour so much, that it was actually my second tour of the market. The first time was with a friend, but this time I brought several friends. Great time learning the history and culture with a knowledgeable guide. Ate our way through the market 🙂
Mr. Chris B. from USA traveled on 13 Jun 2012:
Bob was very knowledgeable and made the trip a lot of fun.
